The legionary class

Today I'd like to share some insights in the first class I designed. This seemed like the easiest one to start out with out of the six total I have sketched out.
During the Republic, Roman soldiers were primarily farmer-soldiers. In times of peace, they worked their land; in times of war, they gathered their gear and fought for Rome. That's right — they had to purchase their own equipment. In the late Republic, Gaius Marius reformed the legions and transformed them into a professional standing army. From that point on, the state provided weapons and armor, and even the poorest citizens could enlist.
When people imagine a typical Roman legionary — equipped with a short sword (gladius), throwing spear (pilum), segmented armor (lorica segmentata), and a bright red rectangular shield (scutum) — they’re often picturing the Imperial-era soldier, not one from Marius' time. It's important to note that before these reforms, a soldier’s gear depended on his wealth. There were broad equipment standards per class, but no uniformity like we think of today.
One of the core principles of Invictus is to incorporate elements people recognise so we will take a creative liberty an add the lorica segmentata to the game ;-)
On to the legionary core principles that I've used to design the class against:
- Disciplined
- An able warrior
- Cares for people around him
- Can use all the types of armor
- Can use all the types of weapons
- Had lots of training and conditioning
- Fighting as a unit makes the unit stronger
- Can look after himself
- First aid skills
Strengths:
- Strength
- Fighting
- Surviving
- Cooperation
Weaknesses:
- Speed
- Using magic
- Working alone
Check out the PDF to see what "moves" the Legionary has at its disposal. I'm happy with how the class turned out. Playtesting will show what changes have to be made to make it balanced against the rest, but that's still on the horizon.
